Natural Deodorant Love

As a dietitian and total foodie I really care about the food I eat and try to ensure I am eating healthy (at least most of the time). In the last few years I started focusing on eating more plant based meals, locally sourcing foods, and eating seasonally. With all of this I started to rethink some of the products I was using (skin care, deodorant, creams etc.) and began searching for some more ‘natural’ alternatives to my beauty care products. However, I found it challenging to find a natural deodorant that worked for me. I tried a several products that seemed to work for a few days and then eventually stopped. I eventually gave up and decided to use men’s deodorant instead (because most wom

Freezing your Meals

Fall is almost here (officially at least, the warm weather is making me feel differently). With fall comes some of my favourite comfort foods including soup, chili, stew, and roasted chicken. When making meals that take some extra time, it's beneficial to make big batches and freeze some for busy weeknights to help ensure you and your family are eating healthy. Storing food in the freezer will help you save time, money, and energy in the kitchen. But how do you ensure that you’re freezing foods correctly? Here are 6 tips that will help take the guesswork out of freezing leftover food. 1. Be sure to cool foods prior to freezing them. Cooked foods will cool down faster if they are left uncover

Pumpkin Pie Granola

I LOVE granola, it is definitely one of my favourite 'snacky' type foods (if you don't already know...I have a sweet tooth). I especially love it as a topping for plain yogurt or a baked apple. The best part about granola is its simplicity, it takes no time to make and only gets a couple of dishes dirty (who doesn't love that?) The other day I was wandering around winners and I happened to find pumpkin butter (this made me way too excited). I don't know if you have ever had apple butter, but it's essentially the same thing but made from pumpkin. So I bought some an experimented with a granola recipe. I am loving the outcome. Give this pumpkin pie granola a try the next time your craving some

Pumpkin Spice Zucchini Muffins

Even though the trees are still green, back to school season tends to make me think FALL. Fall is my absolute favourite season from the changing leaf colours, to the crisp air, thanksgiving, boots with jeans, and of course everything PUMPKIN! However, fall isn't here just yet and my counter is still full of fresh farm veggies (including tons of zucchini). I decided to experiment with my healthy banana muffin recipe and create a summer-fall fusion muffin. These muffins are incredible. They use zucchini, have the fall pumpkin spice flavour, are low in sugar, and a good source of fibre and protein. They are filled with nutritious ingredients, but delicious enough to taste like a treat. I hope y

Homemade Peach Crisp

As you may know I am a big peach lover, especially when they are in season. So naturally I am loving all the Niagara peaches in my local grocery stores. I also love to bake on Sundays, so yesterday I decided to experiment with a peach crisp. It still has some sugar and butter, however there is A LOT less than most typical crisp recipes. Because of that I recommend using your ripe peaches to enhance the natural sweetness. If you're in a baking mood, give this healthy peach crisp recipe a try and let me know what you think. Makes 6-8 servings I used a 11' x 8' baking dish Ingredients: Filling: 8 small-medium peaches (ripe and peeled) 1 tbsp. brown sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. almond extract (o

Back to School Lunches

It's that time of year again, back to school! I always find this time of year bittersweet, summer is coming to and end but a new chapter is beginning (and fall foods and colours are just around the corner). It can be challenging packing lunches for your child, but having a plan of what to pack can make your life a heck of a lot easier! Packing healthy lunches will help fuel your child's activity, learning, play, and most importantly help them grow. Below are some tips and lunch ideas to help kickstart your planning this fall. Try this: Get your kids involved. Have your child help with the planning and packing of their lunch, sit down with them and plan some lunches together. Depending on the
