The family food connection

This weekend is dedicated to families, and when I think of my family I also think of food. Do you have foods or meals that remind you of a loved one? My family is somewhat of a "foodie" family, our celebrations revolve around food (e.g. birthdays, special occasions, holidays etc.), we always ate together as a family, and my childhood babysitter and grandmother was a chef. She is one of the reasons I am who I am today. To me, food represents family, culture, and love. There is nothing better than eating good food with the people you love. In honour of family day weekend, I got reflecting on my foodie family memories and I can relate foods to most of my family members. When I think of my mom I

Less sugar please?

If you don't know me you should know: 1) I have a sweet tooth! So, I am always looking for healthy alternatives to satisfy those sweet cravings (hence my love for baking healthy treats). I call these cravings my "sugar monkey". The little monkey that sits on my shoulder and asks for sugar (and often times I give in and feed it). 2) I am very passionate about sugar education. Sugar is EVERYWHERE, and I think it's important to realize how much sugar we are consuming on a daily basis. Becoming more aware can help you make simple small changes that will make a difference in the amount of sugar you are consuming. Side note: I know that the more I consume sugary foods the hungrier my "sugar monke

Matcha green tea smoothie bowl

I have been obsessing over matcha green tea lately (and when I say lately, I mean for the past 2 years haha). It is my favourite in a latte, but recently I have been adding it to smoothies! This smoothie bowl provides you with antioxidants, energy, protein, and lots of fibre! Try it for breakfast or a mid-afternoon snack! :) Ingredients: 1 cup kefir (plain) 1 tsp. matcha green tea powder 1 bunch frozen spinach 1 banana 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tsp. ground flax Toppings: 1/2 cup fresh raspberries 1/4 cup roasted slivered almonds 2 tbsp. unsweetened shredded coconut 1/4 cup granola (optional) Directions: Blend all smoothie ingredients together, pour into bowl. Top with toppings and enjoy! :) U

#EatTogether Mission

This year we are celebrating Canada's 150th birthday and presidents choice has made it a mission to get more Canadians to eat together (#eattogether). I came across this video and it gave me goosebumps from head to toe. I think it's because I really felt the message - nothing brings us together like eating together (or at least I think so). Before continuing on with this read, I want you to ask yourself how you feel when you eat with your family, friends or others? What thoughts, feelings or memories come to mind? I have countless wonderful memories that come to mind, but my feeling is calmness. Although preparing a meal is time consuming, and cleaning is even worse, there is something calmi

Stop targeting children with unhealthy food ads

I don't routinely watch child programming, however when I do (either with my nephews or purposely creeping YTV out of genuine curiousty) I am shocked by the advertisements targeting children. These advertisements aren't just toy advertisements but all sorts of food ones (and unhealthy foods). In fact, a recent article found that over 90% of food advertisements to children and teens were for unhealthy foods (e.g. high in fat, salt, or sugar). This is a major concern because childhood obesity is on the rise, with 30% of Canadian children 2-17 years of age being either overweight or obese (2). In addition, children are spending more and more time in front of screens, with the average Canadian c
