The family food connection

This weekend is dedicated to families, and when I think of my family I also think of food. Do you have foods or meals that remind you of a loved one? My family is somewhat of a "foodie" family, our celebrations revolve around food (e.g. birthdays, special occasions, holidays etc.), we always ate together as a family, and my childhood babysitter and grandmother was a chef. She is one of the reasons I am who I am today. To me, food represents family, culture, and love. There is nothing better than eating good food with the people you love.

In honour of family day weekend, I got reflecting on my foodie family memories and I can relate foods to most of my family members.

When I think of my mom I always think of her delicious soups, she is seriously gifted. Soup is also my comfort soup, it reminds me of home and family.

When I think of grandmas' I think of pasta and crostoli (a delicious dessert one of my nonna's makes)

When I think of my aunts, I think about infamous mud cake, nutella sweet bread and delicious baked brie mixtures!

When I think of my dad and grandfathers, I think of growing vegetables, farming, and homemade wine.

When I think of my mother-in-law I think of stew, because she makes my absolute favourite beef stew.

When I think of my stepmom I think of this chicken stuffed with onion/spices and cream cheese (it is delicious).

When I think of my stepdad I think of homemade sausages (because he loves to make them).

My list can go on forever. All of my family members remind me of food, so many of my favourite family memories revolve around food and mealtime. Thinking back to my childhood, my siblings and I use go apple picking and make apple pies as a family. We actually had this mini production line going (because there were 7 us, including my mom and stepdad). Food is also how I show my love, I love cooking for my family and my dog gets to taste almost everything I make (lucky girl). Food helps us create memories, and often times these memories make that food so desirable. It's because the food item represent more than food and nutrition, it can represent love and happy times.

This family day weekend I encourage you to think about your family food memories and if you don't have any, maybe you can create one this weekend! We eat for many reasons, and food memories is definitely one of them. What are your favourite food memories? What is a food memory you would like to create?

I hope you all enjoy the sunshine and a love filled family day weekend!

Until next time,

Eat Right Feel Right - Angela XO
