New Year New You?

New year new you? We hear this saying a lot when we head into the new year. What goals do you want to achieve? What new year resolutions are you going to set for yourself? I often find it hard to think about new year goals for myself, I mean it's an entire year to think about (that's a long time!) Thinking about an entire year often feels daunting to me.

We often set these huge new year goals, but once the enthusiasm wears off the goal slowly starts to fade. But let's be positive, it is a new year right? And I don't want your goals to fade. You might have some major goals in mind, but I encourage you to think smaller. What is something you want to accomplish by march, or perhaps over the month of January?

If you have a major goal in mind (that perhaps seems daunting) what are some small steps you can take this month to help you achieve your goal?

The new year doesn't have to mean a new you, it can simply be a fresh start. This is one of my favourite quotes of all times and something I would like you to remember this 2017. "You are allowed to be both a masterpiece and a work in progress, simultaneously." - Sophia Bush

My guide to setting new year goals

Step 1:

Think about 3-5 things that you truly value, things that are super important to you. Some examples could be your family, your job or future job, your health, intimate relationships, friendships, self-care etc. Think broadly here.

Step 2:

Rate on a scale of 1-10 how happy you are with your list above. 1 being not happy at all and 10 being super happy, completely content. Rating yourself a 10 in an area doesn't have to mean it's "perfect," but that you are happy with that area of your life.

Step 3:

Based on your ratings and some personal self-reflection perhaps pick 1 or 2 areas you would like to improve on. If you choose health, what about your health do you specifically want to improve? Your level of physical activity? Your weight? Your mealtimes? Your self care? Think smaller here, because health is big!

Step 4:

What are 1 or 2 goals you can set for yourself for the month of January or perhaps January and February that will help you improve an area of your life that is super important to you. For example if you picked health because you want to improve your physical activity levels, perhaps you will plan to do a yoga class once a week over the next 2 months. Or perhaps you want to improve your intimate relationship, maybe you will plan to schedule 2 date nights over the next 2 months. Your goal has to work for you. Think about what is realistic for your current situation and start small. When you set a goal ask yourself when you are going to start and what you are going to do.

Remember that after you reach the end of the month or two months you can always reflect on what worked and what didn't and reassess your goals for moving forward. Small steps are the key in making changes that are maintainable. "Your speed doesn't matter, forward is forward." - The Latest Kate
